Apple had yet another superlative Christmas quarter, selling millions of iPhones, iPod touches and iPads. Thereupon, you’d expect the people who make and sell apps to have done well, too. However, EA doubled down on success by running an well timed promotion that put them in command of the App Store charts.
Electronic Arts is very, very clever. You might not know it, but Apple freezes the App Stores charts just before Christmas and the game maker packed the listing with its titles by running an across the board price reduction.
“In December, a well-timed promotion of our iPhone and iPad games resulted in an unprecedented share and chart position for our titles,” EA COO John Schappert told JoyStiq. “The day after Christmas, the millions who were activating their new devices, EA held 14 of the top 25 paid apps for the iPhone and 15 of the top 25 paid apps for the iPad. Needless to say we had a record-breaking quarter on iOS.”
He added that the word puzzle game Scrabble even outsold books for the Kindle, another hot-selling device. And, although Schappert’s company didn’t own the top spot on App Store chart, Chillingo did with Angry Birds, EA does own Chillingo.
And, now that EA’s strategy is known, what do you think every app selling will be doing next Christmas? I’m looking forward to all of those cheap, cheap games and apps…
What’s your take?
